Lloyd was recruited at the age of 11 to join a singing group "N-Toon", created by artist developer Joyce Irby of the 80's all girl band Klymaxx. She landed two major deals for the group, Warner Records, and Dreamworks. The group had marginal success with a single "Ready" but the group eventually disbanded. Irby, Lloyd's manager, at the time of began shopping around for a solo deal through her company Diva One Entertainment. He soon was signed to MCA Records with his first single-to-be "Young Girl". Irby using her contact with Irv Gotti's attorney, Ron Sweeney set up a meeting with Irv and using "Young Girl" and "Southside" as a demo, landed a new recording contract with The Inc./Def Jam Records with Irv Gotti.
